Den Boon began his career as a draughtsman for architects before joining the De Stijl group in 1929. He worked closely with Gerrit Rietveld, another important member of the movement, and contributed to the design of the famous Red and Blue chair.

In 1948, Den Boon founded the architectural group Groep 32 with other former De Stijl members. He also worked as an industrial designer, creating furniture, lighting and objects for companies such as the Leerdam glass company.

Den Boon died in 1968 at the age of 55. His work continued to influence designers and architects in the years that followed, and he is considered a pioneer of modern design in the Netherlands.
