Hopmi chair with tip-up-seat by Gerrit Rietveld In 1932 Gerrit Rietveld designed two different chairs for Hopmi, one of which had a tip-up-seat for theater/cinema Vreeburg in Utrecht, above which he lived for many years. HM Mertens saw this chair, adapted it and used it the same year in theRemonstrantse church he was working on. (architectJ. Roodenburgh)These were produced by UMS which later became Pastoe. He replaced the seat and back with his own and added the armrests. The frame by Gerrit Rietveld is designed for easy assembly and disassembly with the chromedTorpedo nut/bolts patented by Hopmi, who usually made gas-pipes and bicycles but wanted to expand into furniture.The chromedTorpedo nut/bolt has a double thread to connect two steel tubes without welding. black shaped curved bent plywood seat and back; seat spring loaded (originally) red metal tube frame, later painted teal vintage, retro, bauhaus, mid-century modern 1930s, thirties Literatuur: Rietvelds Universum,Ida van Zijl – R.Dettingmeijer – M.T.van Thoor, Nai publishers 2010 Rotterdam, p.139-153. with the seat up the chair is 45 cm deep, with it down 54 cm deep
