Knoll has become a household name in the world of design thanks to two extraordinary personalities: Hans Knoll, founder of the furniture company, and his wife Florence, a leading designer. Let's take a closer look today at the work of Florence Knoll, and more particularly at one of her creations: the Florence Knoll dining table. Florence Schust, her real name, was born in the United States in 1917. She studied at the Architectural Association of London and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. It was at the latter school that she met the famous Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, studying under him. Following this, she met Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius, for whom she worked in Boston. 1941 marked a turning point for the brilliant young Florence! It was during this year that she met her future husband, the entrepreneur Hans Knoll, who was none other than the founder and director of the incredible publisher Knoll International. As a couple, both in the city and at work, they founded a brand new company called Knoll Associates. She worked there as a designer until 1955, when her husband died. She then took over the management of the company. Knoll published pieces by such design geniuses as Isamu Noguchi, Eero Saarinen , Pierre Jeanneret and Harry Bertoia . Florence Knoll has designed numerous pieces: tables, armchairs, sofas, storage units, etc. Her creations are recognisable by their clean, sober style and neutral tones. It's also worth noting that each of her pieces is called "Florence Knoll". The dining table is no exception. In 1961, Florence Knoll was looking for a table that would also serve as a desk. She realised that there was no table that met her needs. So she came up with the idea of designing a table with pure curves and simple lines, with no superfluous elements. A fine tribute to the teachings of her mentor Ludwig Mies van der Rohe! The tabletop comes in a range of shapes and sizes. It can be oval (198 cm and 244 cm) or round (137 cm). It is available in marble, wood and even laminate. You can find a wide variety of colours and finishes, as can be seen at www.knoll.com : For marble : For marble : For wood For wood For laminate For laminate The base can be in polished or satin-finish chromed steel : The "Florence Knoll" table can be found in many businesses as well as in many interiors; it can be used as a desk but also as a dining table. Its success lies in its sober, pure design, which gives it an exceptional timelessness! Find the superb vintage Florence Knoll table on Design Market! One of the most iconic design chairs is the Barcelona Chair by Mies van der Rohe. The chair was exhibited in 1929 during the World Exhibition in Barcelona and is one of the best-selling designer armchairs ever. It is amazing how a chair has not lost its popularity for more than 90 years and remains a symbol of elegant and modern design. That is why this week is an ode to architect and furniture designer Mies van der Rohe.
